Sen. Betty Boyd
Born and raised in Connecticut, Betty Boyd received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Upsala College in East Orange, NJ, an institution of the Lutheran Church in America. She did graduate work in Psychology and Social Work at Fairfield University (CT).
Betty and her family moved to Colorado in 1974 and she became active in the Lakewood Community and in the faith community. She has held congregational, synodical, and national leadership positions in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Lutheran Church Women in the Lutheran Church in America (a predecessor church body to the ELCA). She co-chaired the transition team for the Rocky Mountain Synod when the ELCA was created through a three church body merger in 1988.
As Director of the Lutheran Office of Governmental Ministry (now Lutheran Advocacy Ministry) in Colorado, Betty did social justice advocacy at the Colorado legislature and worked in congregations to encourage grass-roots advocacy, based on the theology and social statements of the ELCA.
First elected in 2000, Betty served from 2001 to 2012 in the Colorado General Assembly, first in the House of Representatives and later in the Senate. She chaired the Health and Human Services Committees in both chambers and passed significant legislation in the both the healthcare and human services arena to improve the lives of vulnerable people in the state. She was also known as the “Champion of Choice”, carrying legislation for reproductive justice. She passed legislation to require Emergency Contraception for victims of sexual assault, “EC in the ER”. One of her two most valued legislative awards is the Alex Lukens Faith and Freedom Award from RCRC. She was Senate President Pro Tem when she was term-limited in 2012.
Upon her retirement from the legislature, Governor Hickenlooper appointed Betty to chair the Community Living Advisory Group. Betty currently serves as Public Policy Director for both the Colorado State and Lakewood Branch of AAUW (American Association of University Women). She enjoys music, choral singing, and has resurrected her joy of knitting for a young granddaughter.
