Dear Friend of CORCRC, “Roe continues to exist, but only in the way a storefront on a western movie set exists: a mere façade to give the illusion of reality.”  – Chief Justice William Rehnquist in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey, 1992 It is a painful fact that this 1992 quote is still accurate and reproductive rights are at great risk 27 years later.  It’s not that Americans have changed their minds about abortion: only one fifth of Americans think that abortion should be banned. Surveys consistently report the public’s support for abortion. Though public attitudes may consistently be in support of abortion and reproductive rights, the balance of power has drastically shifted due to the make-up of the Supreme Court and the aggressive, restrictive legislative efforts on the state......

Dear Friend of CORCRC, Potpourri of News: Women’s issues and women’s perspectives are driving politics and policies around the globe. Reproductive rights, health and justice are a driving force across the spectrum of concerns here and abroad. Because keeping up with current events is nearly impossible, here is a potpourri of news articles that address the ramifications of news events on women and their families. In the USA, abortion is more than a symbolic wedge of public opinion. Abortion rights and access are so threatened that several red states have passed or are pushing through bills that prohibit an abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected. Fetal heartbeat is usually detected around 6 weeks, which is before most women even know that they are pregnant. Fortunately, courts are challenging the constitutionality of......

Dear Friend of CORCRC, Mail order abortion pills now available Dr. Rebecca Gomperts established Aid Access a decade or so ago that ships abortion pills to patients around the world.  In October, the Dutch websiteAidAccess.org began shipping abortion pills to the United States as a result of growing requests. In 2015, CORCRC hosted a viewing of the documentary VESSEL.  The film chronicled the mission of Dr. Rebecca Gomperts who acted on the conviction that laws do not control whether or not abortions happen; the only thing they can control is whether or not they happen safely. Dr. Gomperts, founder of Women on Waves, sailed a ship around the world, providing abortions at sea in international waters for women with no legal alternative. Aid Access allows a woman to self- manage an early......

Dear Friend of CORCRC, Expressing unity and solidarity, the interfaith community attended Friday prayers at the Colorado Muslim Society mosque in Arapahoe County in response to the violent tragedy at a mosque in New Zealand. Those who associate religion/faith with the capacity for people to be compassionate and supportive had their convictions restored this past week. This welcomed response reinforces the ideal version of the United States as a noble experiment – a ‘melting pot’ of people of different cultures, races and religions. At least that is the myth many of us were taught and cling to. Thank you to those who attended and supported the Colorado Muslim community. This expression of community support is particularly important in the face of a simmering momentum of active hate groups in this country and state. According......

Dear Friend of CORCRC, The issue of personhood, “fetal rights,” is now in the Alabama courts.  An Alabama man is suing an abortion clinic on behalf of a fetus, referred to as “Baby Roe” by the Judge. The plaintiff, Ryan Magers, names the fetus as a co-plaintiff in the suit for “wrongful death” because his ex-girlfriend decided not to carry her unwanted pregnancy to term. This case could open Pandora’s box to erode Roe by possibly granting legal rights to fetuses equal to or greater than the woman carrying them. Another challenge to Roe is the possibility of mandating that the sperm donor be given the power of approving the medical procedure of abortion. Both of these potential changes in the law are frightening and must not see the light of day. Alabama Judge Allows......
